The Roman passage
under Inveresk House at Inveresk
from Inveresk
Parish Lore from Pagan Times, page 42
by R. McD. Sterling, 1894
Entered by a stair from the
court-yard of Inveresk House is an
underground vaulted chamber.
This is all now accessible of a
subterranean passage over which the
villa is built. The form of the
arch is decidedly Roman, and the
masonry indicates great
antiquity. This passage is
believed to have afforded means of of
communication between the interior of
the fort and the colonia beyond.
When the present approach from
Newbigging to Inveresk was made last
century, a part of it was come upon.

The Roman
tunnel exit to civilian (colonia or
vicus) area north of Inveresk House
The tunnel has been bricked up, however
the lintel beam clearly marks its
location.
